Councillor wants primary school constructed
Mchengautuba West Ward councillor Pyele Chiumia (UTM Party) in Mzuzu City Constituency wants Mzuzu City Council (MCC) to speed up the construction of permanent structures at Mageza Primary School.
The school, situated in Mchengautuba West, has 370 learners with Standard One to Standard Five classes accommodated in dilapidated wooden structure.
In an interview after visiting the school on Friday, Chiumia blamed the council for the delay to start construction works at the school.
She said: “We discussed the issue at a full council meeting.
“The council adopted plans to construct two school blocks, a head teacher’s office and teachers’ houses. But, so far, there is nothing happening on the ground.”
Mageza Primary School head teacher Aubrey Maseko said the situation at the school is not favourable for learning.
He said: “We do not have teaching and learning materials and desks as well as offices.
“Again, the school has no permanent toilets.”
In an interview, Mzuzu City Council spokesperson Macdonald Gondwe attributed the delay to start construction works to lack of funds.
“The council is aware of the situation at the school, but we do not have ready funds as of now. But, we are trying our best to source funds to start construction works,” he said.
Tovwirane Organisation, under its Women Empowered for Leadership (WE4L) project, organised a tour to the school to appreciate development initiatives that female elected councillors are doing in their respective wards.
